Derrick & I are not farmers in the conventional sense of the word but back in 2005 we found ourselves needing to keep cattle as grazers for rough hill pasture, designated wetlands and species rich grass fields.

Never being ones to shy away from a challenge we set about finding a breed that was:
·Low maintenance and required low running costs.
·Hardy enough to live out all year round in the often harsh environment of a Scottish hill farm.
·Could calve strong healthy calves unaided.
·Able to survive and rear a heavy calf on poorer grazing.

Our search led us to Salers cattle and it’s been a steep learning curve for us but our choice of breed has proved to be everything we hoped for and much more.

Visitors are always welcome at Mains of Callander to see our heifers and young bulls that are for sale or even just to learn more about the breed. We sell direct from the farm if we can - both pedigree and commercial stock. We have developed a particular interest in producing polled animals (no horns). Many of our females are polled and our first stock bull was one of the first polled Sagitaire sons.

This first stock bull Rigel Julius Poll has now been sold. He produced excellent calves for us but because we have retained many of his daughters, we have parted with him.(sadly!) In 2009 we purchased Rigel Rubicon, another polled bull with an excellent pedigree. Rubicon has great length, a very strong growth rate and comes from a superb cow line. We therefore have high hopes for his calves!
